Sri Lanka prison riot: Troops deployed after deadly clashes

## Riot at Mahara Prison

Sri Lanka has deployed troops and elite commandos to manage a violent outbreak at Mahara Prison, located near Colombo. The unrest resulted in the death of one inmate and injuries to six others. The incident highlights the ongoing issue of overcrowding in the country's prisons.

## Overcrowding Crisis

Mahara Prison, designed to hold far fewer inmates, currently houses around 4,100 prisoners, which is about four times its intended capacity. This problem is widespread across Sri Lanka's prison system, with many inmates awaiting trial, primarily for drug-related offenses.

## Recent Unrest

The recent riot follows a similar incident in the same region last month, where 10 guards and 21 inmates lost their lives. In November 2020, another riot at Mahara resulted in 11 inmate deaths and numerous injuries.

## Government Response

Authorities are considering converting unused state buildings into additional prison facilities to alleviate overcrowding. The government continues to face challenges in managing the prison population and ensuring safety within these facilities.
