## Middle East Airlines Show Signs of Recovery

Airlines in the Middle East are gradually recovering from the disruptions caused by the Iran conflict, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). In June 2026, passenger traffic for these carriers decreased by 13.9% compared to the previous year, a significant improvement from the 28.8% drop in May.

## Global Air Travel Demand Falls

Globally, air travel demand fell by 1.7% in June compared to the same month in the previous year. This marks the third consecutive month of decline, with capacity dropping by 1.3% and the load factor decreasing to 84.2%.

## Regional Performance

Middle Eastern airlines saw a 14% decline in international demand, with capacity down by 11% and the load factor at 76.3%. However, traffic between the Middle East and Asia improved, falling by 11.6% in June compared to a 25.6% drop in May. The Middle East-North America corridor also showed recovery, with only a 1.9% decline in June.

## Challenges and Outlook

IATA's Director General, Willie Walsh, noted that domestic market declines in China, the US, and Japan contributed to the global demand drop. He warned that rising fuel prices could lead to higher airfares. Despite these challenges, stabilizing the Middle East and normalizing oil supplies could enhance prospects for airlines and economies worldwide.

## Regional Variations

European carriers experienced growth, with demand rising by 0.8% and international traffic up by 1.5%. African airlines saw the highest increase in demand at 3.8%, while Asia-Pacific and North American carriers faced declines of 2% and 1.1%, respectively.
