Philippines hikes fuel surcharge, pushing up ticket prices in early August

## Fuel Surcharge Increase

Starting August 1, airfares for flights within and from the Philippines will rise due to a hike in the fuel surcharge. The Philippine Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) has raised the surcharge from Level 8 to Level 13, effective until August 15.

## Impact on Ticket Prices

The new surcharge allows airlines to charge between ₱423 and ₱1,237 for domestic flights, depending on distance. International flights will see surcharges ranging from ₱1,396.74 to ₱10,385.42. This is a significant increase from the previous Level 8 rates, which were lower.

## Regulatory Approval Required

Airlines must obtain CAB approval to apply the new surcharge rates. The CAB has provided an application form on its website for airlines to use.

## Purpose of the Surcharge

Fuel surcharges help airlines manage fluctuating fuel costs. The CAB regulates these charges, adjusting them based on current fuel prices. The board reviews and updates the surcharge levels every 15 days to reflect market conditions.

## Interim Measure

This pricing strategy will remain until market conditions stabilize. The CAB has set a conversion rate of $1 to ₱61.65 for surcharges collected in foreign currencies.
