Dubai Metro Blue Line update: How a giant underground 'factory' is carving tunnels beneath International City

## Al Wugeisha: The Tunnel Boring Machine

Deep beneath Dubai's International City, a massive tunnel boring machine named Al Wugeisha is at work on the new Dubai Metro Blue Line. This machine, weighing 2,000 tonnes and stretching 163 meters, is responsible for carving out tunnels that will connect five underground stations.

## Construction Progress

The tunneling operation began in May, and Al Wugeisha has already excavated approximately 1,200 meters. On average, it advances between 13 and 17 meters daily, with the potential to reach up to 30 meters in a single day.

## Dragon Mart Station Site

The Dragon Mart Station, a key location on the Blue Line, covers 8,118 square meters, with a total construction footprint of 39,480 square meters. During a recent site visit, around 580 workers were actively involved in the construction.

## Workforce and Operations

Across the International City project area, approximately 2,080 workers are engaged, operating in shifts around the clock. The use of the tunnel boring machine minimizes surface disruption, ensuring that the city above remains largely unaffected by the underground activities.

## Future Impact

Once completed in 2029, the Dubai Metro Blue Line will span 30 kilometers and include 14 stations. This expansion is expected to enhance connectivity for over one million residents, further integrating Dubai's metro network into the city's rapidly growing communities.
