## Record Oil and Gas Production
Argentina's oil industry reached a new milestone in May 2026, with oil production hitting an unprecedented 887,227 barrels per day. This marks a 19% increase compared to the same period last year. Natural gas production also surged, reaching 5.5 billion cubic feet per day, close to the country's historical peak.
## Vaca Muerta: The Driving Force
The Vaca Muerta shale formation is central to this growth, contributing over 70% of Argentina's oil output and nearly 70% of its gas production. Known for its vast reserves, Vaca Muerta is estimated to hold 16 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 308 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
## Investment and Infrastructure Expansion
The shale boom has attracted significant investment, with over $10 billion expected in 2026. State-controlled YPF plans to invest $5.8 billion, focusing on unconventional operations in Vaca Muerta. Private companies like Vista Energy, Pluspetrol, and Pan American Energy are also increasing their spending.
## Future Prospects
Analysts predict that Argentina's oil production could rise to between 1 million and 1.5 million barrels per day by 2030. This growth could position Argentina as a major energy exporter, enhancing its role in global oil markets.
